What is USDA?
USDA is the abbreviation for United States Department of Agriculture, which is the state agency responsible for developing and implementing US government policies on agriculture, food, etc.
Compared to other organic certifications such as Organic Vietnam, Organic EU, etc., USDA is the most reliable certification. USDA’s assessment process is extremely strict, only products containing at least 95% organic ingredients are eligible for certification. At the same time, only products that meet this standard are allowed to use the “USDA Organic” label on the packaging.
USDA and Organic Product Labeling Levels
- The “ 100% organic ” label indicates a product made from 100% certified organic ingredients.
- The “ Organic ” label indicates that a product must contain at least 95% certified organic ingredients, with the remainder subject to safety testing.
- The “ Made with Organic Ingredients ” label indicates that the product contains at least 70% certified organic ingredients.
USDA Standard Grade
The USDA classifies food processing lubricants into three levels, based on food contact and safety:
- USDA H1 : For lubricants used where incidental food contact is possible. Allowable exposure levels shall not exceed 10 mg/kg food.
- USDA H2 : Applies to non-food contact locations. These substances must still be safe in the manufacturing environment.
- USDA H3 : These are edible lubricants, approved by the FDA according to the standards: 21 CFR 172.860 (corn oil, soybean oil), 21 CFR 172.878 and 21 CFR 178.3620(a) . They are completely safe for children, pregnant and lactating women.
